Welcome to our Blog!

On this site we want to open a discussion about advertising in political campaigns. Therefore we should take a look at Obama’s election campaign and contrast it to Merkel’s election campaign. What headings and slogans did they use and what effect did those have on the voters?

Apart from that we want to focus on advertising, special "Obama products" and check if Merkel had ads like that, too.

Please feel welcome to give us your thoughts.

We give everything to boost demand!

This advertising by Bruno Banani was to be seen in 2009 before the election in different cities in form of posters as well as in the internet.

It offers a new sales discount, the so-called "Banani-Abwrackprämie" (scrappage bonus). Famous politicians like Angela Merkel, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Guido Westerwelle, Horst Seehofer, Gregor Gysi, Ursula von der Leyen and Cem Özdemir are drawn in their underwear. But you do see that their body features have been remodelled. All of them look like real models (except for the little beer belly of the bavarian prime minister).

But the image raises an important question: Does advertising still have borders that are NOT to cross? Is it allowed to show a chancellor in that way?

Either way, Banani might feel happy because the thing they certainly got through this advertisement is attention. Since the producer offers to give reduction on new bought clothing if you bring your old underwear back into their stores. Just like the scrappage bonus.

Though, the connection to real politics might get lost with that drawing. Since it is only used ad the company's special marketing strategy, one might feel a little confused that this works.

In the internet page of "Die Welt", a poll was taken about that controversive topic and those are the elaborations:

How do you like the Bruno-Banani advertisement?
Answer Number 1: Funny 52%
Answer Number 2: Stimulative 3%
Answer Number 3: Boring 15%
Answer Number 4: Embarrassing 11%
Answer Number 5: Tasteless 20%

Still, the question remains whether this should be done or not. Merkel certainly was not asked but she did not take it too seriously either. A representative simply did not want to comment on this sort of advertisement.

Well, would you like to be drawn for an advertisement without giving permission and find your picture shown all over the country on huge posters? Somehow we think that the personal freedom might be ignored in here. And yet I suppose that even politicians sometimes have to keep up with the time and remain a little self-ironical.
