Even a non-govermental organization, namely Greenpeace used our chancellor in their interest: to promote their campaign for the climate summit in Kopenhagen in 2009. Therefore they established posters with Angela Merkel. Those posters are drawn similarly to a certain picture of Obama. Please compare them:
Definitely you see the inspiration that was taken from the Obama image but with Angela we used the German nation's colours black, red and golden.
Shepard Fairey has designed the famous Obama Hope picture and recently got an illustrators-prize for that (and some difficulties with the press agency AP because they have the rights on the original picture you can see right here)
Greenpeace asked for more money for climate issues at the NATO meeting by putting this angie poster in a large size on a hot-air-balloon. The picture is designed by Stefan Klein.
The campaign was quite well-structured since Greenpeace realized they had a strong representative with great power among the NATO members.
Putting the "hope" image of Obama into our German context is good and healthy I believe and brings our own nation into focus. Maybe we realize that we also do have a representative who tries her best to lead the nation considering the different opinions that exist within the country.
Altough as several times, the Germans do not seem to have own ideas and imagination since they take the Obama picture into their own context. But if this brings us to a new understanding of our power, it might only do well.
I think it is good to see that people put their hopes into our chancellor and that they realize the power our elected representatives really has. She is able to stand up for what we as a nation might want when it comes to international questions.
What is really done in the end with this power considering climate change might be considered in Greenpeace's rows...
