Welcome to our Blog!

On this site we want to open a discussion about advertising in political campaigns. Therefore we should take a look at Obama’s election campaign and contrast it to Merkel’s election campaign. What headings and slogans did they use and what effect did those have on the voters?

Apart from that we want to focus on advertising, special "Obama products" and check if Merkel had ads like that, too.

Please feel welcome to give us your thoughts.

Problem Patriotism?

Why can people in America show such a patriotism, and why do people in Germany often have problems to identify themselves with the German nationality? In many other countries it is normal to show your flag and to be proud to have exactly this nationality. In Germany it has a lot to do with the national socialist past. After that period, it was not allowed to German people to be patriots. And if they did so, they were called "Nazi", even if they weren't.

During the election campaigns in America, people always show their flags, they are proud of what they are. They are proud of their past, present and future. They are very enthusiastic by showing their sympathy for the candidate. In Germany, people are still afraid to show their patriotism. But is that legitimate? In our generation, we cannot pay for the things our ancestors did. We are no nazis only because we are proud of our country. Yes, we cannot be proud of the things happened in the past, but we can be proud to be Germans. Everybody should be proud of where he or she comes from. That brings me to the point that the people should be more enthusiastic and more patriotic, especially during the election campaigns.

  1. It is so interesting to see how Germans are proud to be Germans when it commes to soccer. :) So many people have German Flags rightnow and they are not ashamed to show that they are proud of the German soccer team. I am asking myself if they are really proud of the country or "just" of the soccer team ???

  2. Of course we cannot be held responsible for the whole Nazi thing, but wthis whole thing happened and there is no way of reversing it. As for my part I cannot imagine myself holding a German flag or putting one of these little flags on our car, just because I don't feel comfortable doing it. I guess patriotism is not really my thing, plus those German flags on EVERY car you see really begin to annoy me.
